10 Tricks to Eliminate Hair Static

Just over a week ago I was enjoying the heat and humidity and how full and fresh my hair felt while I was vacationing in Florida. My hair felt thicker, easier to maintain and static free. I could actually backcomb my hair to create the perfect volume without looking like I had rubbed my head on a balloon.  Living in Toronto with the bone chilling cool temperatures we’ve been experiencing this winter has taken its toll on my hair. I find it almost impossible to style and keep volume when I’m combating severe static. So I did my research to bring all you ladies some helpful anti-static tips to keep your hair fresh, maintainable and static free.

  1. Spray your brush with Static Guard.
  2. Use dryer sheets on your hair. It will give you a static free look with a fresh scent.
  3. Run a little hand lotion through your fingers then apply to your hair when styling
  4. Spray your brush with hair spray before styling. Then re apply after styling to eliminate frizz and hold your hair. Over doing this can dry out your hair though so use sparingly.
  5. Sleep with a humidifier on in your bedroom. This will keep your hair and your skin happy and hydrated.
  6. Spray a very small amount of water on your hair or my favourite Moisture Spray by Cinema Secrets to eliminate the frizz and add a bit of moisture to the hair.
  7. Use a little cocoa butter on your hands to your hair for added shine and to eliminate frizz and static. Don’t over use as it may make your hair look greasy. Moroccan Oil is great too but doesn’t fully eliminate the static.
  8. Always use conditioner after shampooing and spray a little leave in conditioner after showering. This is a major static preventative.
  9. Use a gel, mousse or styling product before drying hair as it will add some weight to the hair and help to eliminate static.
  10.  Spray your clothing with static guard. This will keep your hair static free all day long after using the above methods.

The Winter Vitamin Guide

The Winter Vitamin Guide
During the frigid winter temperatures and office colds/flu’s we tend to resort to over-dosing on Vitamin C, however, there are many other vitamins that we should pay close attention to as they are depleted from the body during the cold/dry season. Vitamin C is great for boosting your immune system, preventing cancers, and shortening and relaxing the common cold/flu symptoms but it’s neither a cure nor a preventative. Take a look at some of these daily vitamins we tend to ignore but are so crucial during the winter season. I’ve stocked up for the winter season with the following packaged vitamins.

Vitamin A
This amazing antioxidant boosts the immune system, improves vision, cuts risk of heart disease, and slows the skin aging process. The antioxidant properties add the proper level of moisture to the skin to combat the winter dryness and keep the skin from being damaged. Women use vitamin A for heavy menstrual periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), vaginal infections, yeast infections, “lumpy breasts” (fibrocystic breast disease), and to prevent breast cancer.
Foods to eat: Carrots, cantaloupe, egg yolks, tomatoes, red peppers, fruits, vegetables
Vitamin B
The eight B vitamins help maintain metabolism, maintains muscle tone, keeps a sharp mind and is a natural anti-stressor. It’s also known as the “beauty” vitamin which promotes healthy hair, nails, and skin. Vitamin B turns carbohydrates into glucose in the body, thus leading to energy production and a decrease in fatigue and lethargy in the body.
Foods to eat: Whole grains, asparagus, meats, eggs, grains.
Vitamin D (try mixing with a Vitamin K)
Doctors have said this vitamin can lower your risk of breast cancer by 50 percent, and it may offer protection from both ovarian cancer and diabetes. Vitamin D is known as the happy pill. Feeling the winter time blues or seasonal affective disorder? Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder typically include fatigue, weight gain and cravings for sweet and starchy foods. Daily intake of 1000 IU has been known to help those with this disorder as well as depression. It also helps with the development and maintenance of your bones and teeth.
Foods to Eat: Milk, Orange juice and salmon. Foods do not give you the suggested daily amount.
A daily Iron supplement may be useful to those tested low in iron to help with the formation of red blood cells which carries oxygen around the body. Proper dosages of iron are necessary for energy, performance, and vitality. Talk to your doctor for the proper dosage if you’re feeling tired, lethargic or light headed.

Homemade Gluten Free Pizza

Do you find it hard to purchase or make a pizza with your food allergies and sensitives or due to a healthy eating/vegan lifestyle?  I have found it near impossible to purchase pre-made frozen pizzas from the grocery store as there is always 1-2 ingredients or products in them or on them I can't have due to allergies. I have discovered the best combinations with gluten free and dairy free brands to create a delicious pizza that is safe for your digestive tract and only takes about 12-15 minutes in the oven. This is truly a tasty guilt free meal.

I have tried many gluten free pizza doughs and found my favourite crust. It's the Udi's Gluten Free pizza crust. It's a beautiful brown rice based thin crust pizza packed with flavour. It doesn't have the awkward taste that some GF crusts have or the strange texture. I served this pizza to friends that don't eat Gluten Free at a dinner party and they couldn't believe when I told them it was all GF and dairy free. They thought it was absolutely delicious. The Udi's package comes with 2 personal sized pizza crusts to customize to your liking. Udi's has several other of my favourite products such as their breads, bagels, and desserts.

I use the following recipe to create the perfect gluten-free dairy-free pizza sauce or if I'm feeling a little lazy and want a quick fix I will use a plain tomato pasta sauce.

Ingredients
1 6-Ounce Can Tomato Paste
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
½ Cup Water
3 Tablespoons Garlic Powder
2 Tablespoons Dried Oregano
1 Tablespoon Sugar
1 Teaspoon Salt
¼ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
½ Teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar

You can really go crazy with any of your favourite toppings but be sure all your meats are all
gluten free and GMO free. You can find gluten free pepperoni at your local grocery stores in
beef and turkey flavours. Ask an employee to help you find it. Metro and Sobeys has them
at the deli counter beside in store pre-made pizza shelf.

Now the cheese is the most important part and the hardest taste
to get right when going diary free and gluten free. The best
brand I found is Daiya. It has a couple different cheeses such as
mozzarella and cheddar from shredded to block cheese and
also new grilled cheese melt-able slices. This is found at
specialty health food stores such as Whole Foods, Organic
Garage etc. The shredded Daiya cheese is now available by the
tofu section in produce at your local grocery store.

Here's a few of it's benefits:
  • Cholesterol free
  • Trans Fat free
  • Dairy free
  • Free of all animal products (Vegan)
  • Free of common allergens including: Dairy (casein and lactose), soy, gluten, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts
  • Free of Artificial Ingredients
  • Free of Preservatives
  • Free of Hormones & Antibiotics
  • Kosher
Look at the back of the Udi's crust package for baking instructions.

Your Tea

It’s the start to a new year and a time for new and fresh beginnings. I decided to do a cleanse with one of my friends. YourTea is an international company that has many tea cleanse options for different needs/goals of your body. I had never done a cleanse before, so I didn’t really know what to expect.

I chose the Tiny Teatox (offered in either a 14 or 28 day cleanse), which is an ancient Chinese herbal tea that will nourish and cleanse your digestive system. This is a great cleanse for weight loss. “This cleanse will assist with reducing weight, easing bloating, increasing digestion functionality, improving skin clarity, increasing energy levels and alleviate issues associated with food intolerances.”

I completed the 14-day cleanse and found amazing results. The plan consists of 3 cups of tea per day before each meal. “Right away I felt energized and felt less bloated and it doesn’t act as a laxative as most tea cleanses do.” Add a little bit of lemon or honey and it’s a great treat. The tea contains all natural ingredients such as
Camellia Sinensis, Catsia, Lotus Leaf, barley, white Tea, Prunella Spike, Adzuki Bean. There are also other tea cleanses specific to everyday teas for men & women, fertility teas, anti-c Teas (for cellulite).

Go to YourTea.com and check out which cleanse is best for you!

Chickpea Detox Salad

While babysitting a friends baby I of course raided their fridge to discover an amazing salad that had my mouth salivating. My friend later explained to me that the heaven in my mouth was actually part of her new detox and healthy living plan she started from reading and following the book JOYOUS HEALTH; Eat and Live Well Without Dieting.

Cocoa Butter; Your Winter Rescue Remedy

With the frigid Winter weather that's hit that nation recently it's even harder to keep your skin hydrated and chap free this season. I've been trying several different skincare remedies but have found only one product that truly works that I picked up at my local Walmart for $7. It's the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream. Cocoa Butter has been used for years as an anti-aging, skin tightening and skin healer as it is high in antioxidants which helps fight off free radicals. Cocoa Butter is high in fatty acids so it hydrates the skin deeply from the inside out. This is why it works through this polar vortex.

Cocoa Butter is widely used by pregnant women as well as it's been proven to help prevent and reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scaring. It's suitable for all areas of the face and body. I apply the Cocoa Butter in the morning after my normal skincare routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing and then top coat it with a small amount of Palmer's. My face stays hydrated all day and it doesn't clog pores. I have noticed tighter skin and smaller pores and a more even skin tone from using this miracle in a jar. It's amazing for after shaving as it keeps your legs hydrated all day. I apply to my entire body again before bed including my hands and feet and seal the butter in with socks for a deeper treatment. Cocoa Butter has also known to help skin irritations such as eczema and dermatitis.

You can purchase the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream in different forms; in a tube for your lips, in a tube for your face and body and also in a 7.25oz Jar which is the best formula as it's the most concentrated of the three. Palmer's is available at Target, Walmart, Loblaws in Canada. Get hydrated!

The Perfect Brow

I had the privilege of spending my Saturday afternoon on Yorkville Avenue this weekend as I was pampered for a total brow makeover at Toronto's hotspot, MYNC. It's the perfect lash lounge and brow bar in the big city. This chic second floor location is the perfect lounge to update your look. Your eyebrows are one of the most important features on your face. They are your framework. The way they are shaped and groomed can help accent and bring out your eyes and shape your face. Even if you have great brows a quick tidy up and grooming can even help soften facial features. A small change can make a huge difference. I worked with brow stylist Ivy who took me on a tour of my face to create the perfect brow shape to suit my face and bring out my special features. There knowledgeable staff will show you how to fill in your brow and will give you the perfect shape to suit your face shape.

MYNC has already gotten raves and attention by some of the hottest Entertainment shows in the city such as appearing on The Marilyn Denis Show , Cosmopolitan TV and are featured in popular magazines like Lou Lou, Hello Canada and Fashion.

So take 25 minutes and dedicate to you at one of MYNC's fabulous locations below. You won't regret it.  They'll be tickled pink you did :)

My Dream Wedding! Part 1

This past Dec 22, 2013 I (Jessie Sulidis) tied the knot to my pro hockey playing fiancé Jordan Henry in a beautiful ceremony and reception at the Burlington Golf and Country Club.  http://www.burlingtongolfclub.com/Weddings-Events
The weekend turned out to be a winter wonderland as a crazy ice storm swept the GTA leaving many without power and decorated our trees with beautiful icicles. I am doing a 3 part blog to showcase some of the great vendors I used for my beautiful day. First I have to hand it to the Burlington Golf and Country Club who hosted our special day. It’s an unbelievable venue with breath taking views, friendly staff and delicious food.  We did both our ceremony and our reception at the venue making it a one-stop for our guests.  This is a great idea so guests aren't waiting hours between the ceremony and reception. We did our wedding pictures in the morning before starting a 4:30pm ceremony right into reception. We were still able to capture that first moment when Jordan and I saw each other for the first time that day. Our photographer set up a picture perfect moment and caught it on camera.  We had a short but sweet ceremony by reverend Mandi which our guests said it “made them want to renew their vows.” Mandi really got to know Jordan and I as a couple and created the most perfect ceremony for us. I highly recommend her to officiate your wedding. http://marriedbymandi.ca/about/

Secondly I want to share the amazing company I used for my dessert table and wedding cake. After trying several samples from companies in the GTA we went with Cakes Sweets and Treats in Burlington, ON.  http://www.cakessweetstreats.com/ They put together an amazing assortment of mini pastries and mini cakes for our guests all to our choosing and created the most beautiful wedding cake. We chose 4 different treats (pastries and cakes) to accommodate our 125 guests.  I literally walked in with a picture of a wedding cake I had found on Pinterest and she created it for me! It was stunning and on top of it’s great looks, it tasted amazing. There were so many flavours to choose from but we ended up with Red Velvet—one of my personal favs. It was a hit!

Hiring a wedding photographer is one of the most essential elements to your wedding! They are what you're going to look back at on anniversaries over the years, what you're going to share with your kids about your special day, etc. They capture all the fun and memories you shared. That's why we went with our good friend from British Columbia, Jesse Hlady Photography. He is absolutely brilliant and super talented. He flew in to Toronto this past summer to shoot our engagement photos and we loved them so much we had him flown back for our wedding. I was so busy planning this wedding within a month that I literally gave all reins over to Jesse to plan the photos. He took control and the photos turned out unbelievable. He goes above and beyond any photographer I've ever worked with --and I've worked with a lot throughout my career. I highly recommend Jesse to capture your big day. http://jessehlady.com/

Check back later this week for blog posts on my dress, the flowers/center pieces, wedding favor ideas, the DJ, and where I made all my invitations and thank you cards online.
